SUMMARY:Burrough Jazz Presents the James Allsopp Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Experience jazz in the country\nA salute to saxophonist Stan Getz with a broad and exciting repertoire from lush ballads and bossa novas to motoring be bop compositions \nIn a 20 year career James Allsopp has been a featured performer and recording artist for an incredibly diverse range of musicians. James has played in concert and on albums by legendary artists such as The Last Poets\, David Axelrod\, Dr John and Mulatu Astake\, for European jazz luminaries such as Django Bates\, Nostalgia 77\, Kit Downes and Polar Bear\, on more commercial albums by Jamie Cullum and Jorja Smith and as featured soloist in a wide range of compositions by composer Brian Irvine. \nJames’s debut album was nominated for BBC Jazz Award for Best Album 2007 and he won the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation 2008 \n“perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation\, not to mention the most adaptable.” Underscore music magazine \nThe evening comprises a salute to saxophonist Stan “The Sound” Getz. with a broad and exciting repertoire from lush ballads and bossa novas to swinging standards and motoring bebop compositions. Expect a varied program reflecting this range of material with a respectful but not reverential interpretation of the music of Stan Getz\, allowing it to breathe and feel natural for our time. \nColin Oxley studied at the Guildhall School\, graduating in 1990. In that same year he won ‘Best Soloist’ in the National Big Band Competition and has gone on to pursue a highly successful musical career. As a long standing member of Stacey Kent’s group he recorded several albums as well as touring extensively\, including appearances at the Montreux and North Sea jazz festivals and residencies in New York and San Francisco. \nHe is currently a member of James Allsopp’s Quartet\, Steve Fishwick’s Quartet\, the Dave Newton Quartet\, Mark Crooks’ Quintet\, the Back to Basie Orchestra\, John Wilson’s Orchestra\, Steve Kaldestad’s Quartet\, Simon Thorpe’s Swing Band and Eriko Ishihara’s Quintet. Colin has also performed with American legends Scott Hamilton\, Harry Allen\, Hod O’Brien\, John Bunch\, Houston Person\, Warren Vache\, Jeff Hamilton and Bob Dorough\, as well as many of Britain’s top players. Among numerous recording credits\, Colin has recorded two successful piano trio albums with the late Colin Purbrook and (in San Francisco) with Dave Newton. \nIn recent years he has toured widely in Japan and produced several albums for Japanese record labels. In the year 2000\, Colin was voted Jazz Musician of the Year by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. \nIn between touring and recording\, Colin is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. \nOli Hayhurst has been one of the busiest bass players on the London jazz scene since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2000. He is involved in a wide range of music playing with stars of jazz\, classical and world musics. He has been featured on over 60 albums and toured extensively. \n“double bass player Oli Hayhurst\, has a driving sense of energy\, yet also a reflective and transcendent quality.”Susannah Tarbush\, Saudi Gazette\, 20/12/2005 \n“…the always eloquent bass work of Oli Hayhurst.” John Brand\, live review\, Sheffield Jazz Club\, March 2005 \n“As with most of the better tracks\, Oli Hayhurst’s double bass plays a crucial part in leading the melody and setting the mood.” Manchester Evening News\, 6/5/2004 \nDave Storey is a London-based drummer\, composer and bandleader. \nSince the release of his trio’s debut BOSCO in 2019 he has taken them on a 15-date UK tour support by Arts Council England. Featuring multi award-winning saxophonist James Allsopp (Golden Age of Steam\, Django Bates) & bass player Conor Chaplin (Dinosaur\, Flying Machines) the trio released their follow up album JOUSKA in 2020\, also on Impossible Ark Records. \n“…twisty trips around post-bop topography\, fuelled by high-octane virtuoso drumming” London Jazz News \nDOORS OPEN AT 18:30 PERFORMANCE STARTS AT 19:30 \nBurrough Jazz is a not for profit Organisation
